The liability coverages are different for different companies. The New York Car Insurance Companies provide at least the following liability coverages that are mandatory to register the vehicle:
- Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injury and $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for death.
- Uninsured Motorist Coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injury whereas $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for death.
- Property Damage Liability: $10,000
- Basic-no-fault: $50,000
Unlike most other states, New York requires insurance of the vehicle with a company licensed by the New York State Insurance Department. Out-of-state insurance is not acceptable.
When you get insurance of your car, the car insurance company would notify the Department of Motor Vehicle electronically both when it issues you a policy and when the policy ends.
